easyFairs Packaging Innovation 2010 – SHOW REPORT

Held on February 24^th & 25^th at Birmingham’s NEC; this was the first event of the year for Beaubury. Being blow mould manufacturers and bottle designers, we weren’t entirely sure which service would keep us busiest; as it turned out we seemed to be pretty well placed on both sides as we were able to support our existing customers with their enquiries for tooling, as well as fresh, new enquiries for tooling and bottle concept design…

Our new exhibition back-drop which shows images of a project progressing from pencil sketch to supermarket shelf looked great and was relatively easy to assemble; which is just as well – given the limited setup time afforded by easyFairs. Also on our stand we had a projector and screen, on which we had an animated photo slideshow. This consisted of photos of previous design and tooling projects, our design studio and workshop, and a step-by-step photo-story of the path a typical project takes through our system – from project brief to complete blow mould industrialisation.

The doors opened at 10:00hrs on the Wednesday morning and the event was busy from the start; Paul, Mark and Steve manned the stand for the two-day event and where joined for a time on Thursday morning by Technical Director – Rob Beaumont and Toolroom Manager – John Cade. Over the two days we gained many useful new contacts and enquiries, which over the coming months will hopefully develop into new design and tooling projects.

The next event on the Beaubury calendar is in autumn and is the London edition of easyFairs’ Packaging Innovation. To be held in the Business Design Centre, Islington on October 7^th & 8^th – we look forward to seeing you there.

Finally, on behalf of Paul, Steve and myself, I would like to thank everyone who visited our stand – whether it was to pick up a brochure, say a quick hello, or to discuss a specific project – it meant a great deal to us that you took the time to visit – we look forward to seeing you again at the London event in October…if not before.

Solid Carbide Tools Drill Waterways Faster

For the development of the Nemesis bottles Northumbria Blow Mouldings worked with specialist blow moulding toolmaker Beaubury Precision Moulds, and between them they have devised tooling which can run with both PET and HDPE, enabling the Nemesis range to be offered in both materials…

design development and manufacture of plastic blow mould tooling — which are typically

produced from Dural QC7 aluminium tooling billets and Bohler M300 stainless mould steels

especially developed for blow mould applications.’

Palletisation and automation increases capacity

‘We were looking to purchase our first 5-axis machine’ stated Beaubury’s Production Director, Paul Mathews. ‘We were also drilling deep holes and encountering huge problems. However,on selecting a 5-axis Deckel Maho DMU 60P we knew we would experience holding problems hitting all sides at 18K. As a jobbing shop machining one-offs we had always made our own ‘bespoke’ work holding systems, but this would be unsatisfactory on the Deckel.

New Bridgeport Hardinge machining centre installed

Beaubury’s latest machine acquisition is a Bridgeport Hardinge XR-1000 machining centre – details of which are as follows:

The XR-1000 is the latest machine from the Bridgeport stable and is fitted with a Renishaw probing system to minimise setup time and for on machine inspection. Rapid traverse rates of 50m/min, X/Y/Z travels of 1020 x 610 x 610, a workload capacity up to 900kg, and the ability to accommodate workpieces up to 350mm in height, the APC is extremely suitable for a diverse range of jobs and machining applications. Heidenhain’s iTNC530CNC control is fitted.

Other performance enhancing features that are fitted are; through spindle cooland, swarf management system, chip conveyor, chip augers, coolant wash gun and spindle oil chiller.
